VINE — The National Victim Notification Network
Across the country, crime victims and other concerned citizens
are using VINE for access to timely and reliable information about
criminal cases and the custody status of offenders 24 hours a day
over the telephone, through the Internet, or by e-mail.
Victims can call to inquire about the current status of an offender
and can register to be notified immediately in the event of an
offender’s release, escape, transfer, or court appearance.

How VINE Works
• VINE communicates with jail and
prison booking systems in near
real-time, transmitting updated information to the Appriss Data Network™.
• Crime victims and the general public can access the information by calling a
national toll-free number, 1-866-US-4-VINE, the local toll-free number, or
logging onto www.vinelink.com any time of the day or night.
• Victims can inquire whether an offender is held in jail as well as the
facility’s location.
• Users can register to be notified immediately of a change in the offender’s
status, such as release, transfer, or escape.
• When a notification is triggered, VINE automatically calls the number or numbers the victim has provided.
• Calls continue for a designated period
of time, or until the victim enters a fourdigit PIN.

I was able to locate a southern California “in custody” this morning that has not yet appeared on the counties site. Took less than a minute to register for email offender status change information.

Follow up report on VINE (The National Victim Notification Network).

Below find a copy of an email I received early yesterday morning (7/14/06). I removed the name of the inmate as per forum guidelines. For those forum members/victims with a need to track an inmate I found this notification to be timely and accurate saving numerous phone calls to check custody status. I certainly recommend using VINE. click here

Dear Victim:

The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department is committed to ensuring that you receive prompt notification of a change in an inmate's custody status.

This email is to inform you that -------------------- was transferred out of the custody of the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department on 07/14/2006. This inmate is now in the custody of an unspecified agency outside of the jurisdiction of the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department. You will receive no further notifications from the San Bernardino Sheriff's victim notification system on this inmate”.
