marysue heron, welcome to detective forums!!
Adoption records can be hard to get due to some state laws and regulations. I would first ask any living adoptive parents or family members for any information pertaining to your adoption. Write down everything as you go. Contact the state that handled your adoption and ask for any unidentifying records which will be what ever information New York considers appropriate. Go here:
http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_rec ... option.htm
This site will let you know what information is available to you. Request copies of the petition for adoption, and the final decree of adoption. Again, you will be searching for clues. Every clue counts so be sure to write it down. If you can afford to spend money you may want to contact a Confidential Intermediary. Some states and provinces have instituted intermediary or search and consent systems that will allow adoptees and birth parents the ability to contact each other through mutual consent. I hope you find this information of help.
Also, please browse the forums here. Other members have posted information about adoption. You can find it by using the search tool at the top of the page. Thanks and good luck!!
